about

This is a collection of instrumental pieces composed around the themes of loss, grief and grieving. A year ago, my father passed away after a major stroke, and though we did not know it at the time this was the first in a series of losses in our extended family over the ensuing 12 months that has left us all rather shaken and with a great deal to process. They say that 'time heals all wounds', but a major loss is a permanent change - and while we can make peace with it and find ways to move forward, we are doing so transformed, and in a world that will never be quite the same. Much of what has changed, and much of the work we must do to come to terms with it, is in realms that words cannot access... so this music is my way of doing that work and making that peace.

Grief is complex, a shifting sand and a moving target. Anyone who's been through significant loss will probably agree that it's not as simple as just being really sad all the time for a while and then eventually getting over it. It's a strange, highly personal journey with many twists and turns, and much to teach us about acceptance and forgiveness. I've tried to make an album that captures some of that complexity and nuance of emotion.

The title is from one of my father's many little sayings - whenever someone commented on the sky, he would say, well, the sky is always interesting. It stuck with me over the years, and when I conceived of this project it felt right somehow.

Music for Explorers (of inner worlds, invisible landscapes, imaginary realms)

I’ve always been a musical explorer... I need to know what’s behind that door, around that corner, down that pathway shrouded in mystery. I want to find out where it goes and what can be learned and discovered there!

Music is an adventure for me, and the music I make is intended for adventurous listeners...
