about

This 2-spot Ladybird (Adalia bipunctata) is infected by a parasitic fungus in the genus Hesperomyces. The fruiting bodies of the fungus grow on the beetle's exoskeleton, and while they are not directly harmful, in large numbers like this they can inhibit movement and lead to death. In Alexis' video reel (link below) you can see the beetle struggling to free itself from the affliction, without success. It seemed like a somewhat gruesome but evocative image for Hallowe'en, so I made some suitable music, and away we go!
